FAQs for Autoclave

General Information

An autoclave is a device that uses saturated steam under pressure to sterilize medical or laboratory instruments, equipment, and other items. It ensures that all bacteria, viruses, fungi, and spores are destroyed.
An autoclave works by generating steam inside a closed chamber. The steam’s high temperature and pressure effectively kill microorganisms. The typical process involves heating to a temperature of about 121-134°C (250-273°F) for a specific period, usually 5-15 minutes.

Autoclaves come in Horizontal & Vertical Types whereas Cylindrical & Rectangular Autoclaves are sub types of Horizontal Autoclaves.

Usage and Operation

Items such as surgical instruments, laboratory glassware, petri dishes, media, and certain medical waste can be sterilized in an autoclave. However, items that cannot withstand high temperatures or moisture should not be autoclaved.
Ensure items are spaced out to allow steam to circulate freely. Avoid overloading the autoclave, as this can prevent effective sterilization. Use appropriate autoclave-safe containers and wraps.
